Kelly Greener
Oceanography Graduate, Scientific InternAbout Kelly
My name is Kelly, I’m 22 and I’ve just graduated with an MSci Oceanography degree from the University of Southampton. In my spare time I swim and scuba dive. As a diver, I have seen many marine environments, but unfortunately, I have seen more dead sharks than alive. This lead me on to travel to Lombok, Indonesia where I worked with an organisation whose goal was to present alternative incomes for shark fishermen through ecotourism. Having been to the fish market and witnessing the shark fin trade first-hand, my fascination grew. After my time there I wanted to do something about it and educate myself and others about why sharks are so importance for the health of our oceans and their unique ecosystems. Wanting to continue down this path of preserving the marine environment as a career, I thought this internship would be a great opportunity to gain more scientific skills while gaining more knowledge about sharks and the way to reduce threats to them and their environment.
