Tagging Benthic sharks in Gansbaai, South Africa
July has been an interesting month to tag and release benthic sharks around the Gansbaai area. Interns on our Scientific Internship program catch small sharks with the objective to be tagged by fishing, using specific hooks, as well as snorkelling.
During July the team has caught a total of 9 benthic sharks, including Leopard Catsharks and Dark Shysharks. A number of 6 recaptures of which 2 were tagged previously by our intern team. For July the team tagged a 54 cm male Leopard Catshark.
All data has been captured and sent to ORI TAG South Africa.

Another successful trip for our scientific interns!
Shark tagging is a massively important project because it allows us to collect a lot of data about many animals in the area. It’s also a fantastic opportunity for our interns to learn more about fishing and shark handling in general, which they can use to enhance their own career prospects.
